7 continents? or 6...or 5?

In the United States we have 7 continents; we separate North & South America and also included Antartica. In Spain they only count 5 or 6. Most people were taught 5 because Antartica, until fairly recently, was left out. For instance in the the 5 rings of the Olympic logo, each ring represents a continent - the Americas count as one and Antartica is not included. Did anyone know this?

  1. Yes, If I'm not mistaken I think the Mexican's do something else entirely... or mabye its just that they leave out Antarctica, but I did learn about this while rooming with a Mexican in Paris :)

  2. Depends what your definition of a land mass is, right? I think technically the definition is a continuous land mass, therefore N. and S. America would =1, but then how would you account for islands? I am sure there is a scientific definition out there . . .

  4. I had this same discussion with my mom a long time ago when the world cup was here. They had a big conference about soccer and there was a huge display about continents. My mom didn't understand why they were listing 7 when there is only 5. So the Mexicans learn 5. I learned 7. Never heard 6 before.
